Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding

"With some sadness and great relief... I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

That was Noel's message that was posted on the Oasis website after a backstage fight between him and his brother Liam, resulting in, obviously, the break up of Oasis, but was it really a break up? A few months later, Liam decided to form a new band, Beady Eye, but... It's all the same members of Oasis, minus Noel of course. Does this mean they're going to sound exactly like Oasis? Or is this a completely new different sound?

It's Oasis 2.0

Regardless, Beady Eye is still a good band even though it's still basically Oasis. Their "debut" release Different Gear, Still Speeding has been met with really high reviews, and really low soul crushing reviews as well.
-------------------------------------
What do I think about this album?

Alright, let's forget Oasis ever existed and focus solely on the... Okay, you really cannot phase out Oasis because when you listen to the album and close your eyes, you see Oasis! Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily... But I did hope for something new. Regardless, the songs on the album are pretty top notch, they are very catchy and contagious! There are songs like "Four Letter Word" and "Beatles and Stones" where they are very rock and roll and make you groove when you raise the volume a little bit and there are songs like "Wigwam" and "The Morning Son" that give off a real relaxing feeling. This isn't a boring album, but two thirds in, it does start losing its luster. Overall, I do like the album, I give it a 7.5/10, but for the next Beady Eye album, I would love to hear something NEW.

Nirvana - In Utero

What happens when the biggest band in the world tries to separate the real fans from the fake ones. In Utero.

Loud and unapologizing, In Utero delivers a maelstrom of noise that mixes the nicest melodies with the dirtiest grunge. In Utero is Nirvana's 3rd studio album (2nd on a major label) and it is the most underrated out of all their releases.

When people heard Nevermind they got hooked, some got hooked more than others, and some got hooked for the wrong reasons, just because they were on top of the charts and that's what the "cool kids" are listening to. The people that Nirvana were against, are now listening to their music and going to shows and rough housing in a very violent way at concerts to get a release. This angered Kurt and he decided to separate the men from the boys, well, kind of.

What he wanted to do is basically separate his fan base, he wanted to separate the real ones from the fake ones. How does one do this? Simple. What Cobain did was record an album that sounded like what HE wanted it to sound like, not worrying about what people or critics would have to say about it. The ones that truly liked Nirvana stayed and listened to it. The others, who expected Nevermind 2.0 or something like that, turned away.

Although it wasn't as commercially successful as Nevermind I think In Utero stands out as the best and most rawest Nirvana album released.
------------------------------------------------
What do I like about this album?

In Utero is raw, and real. There is no bullshit in this record. It's more real, it's more, just, ughh! You know? I mean, Nevermind was amazing too, but I feel like there was a lot of effects going on that weren't totally necessary. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it just sounded different. In Utero is just punk rock in that sense, and that appeals to me very much so. I love the variety of songs the album has, from the very laid back "All Apologies" to the fuckin' grunge "Milk It" it's an amazing album and it's one that reaches my heart. I'm almost in tears when I hear "Heart Shaped Box" I could not recommend a Nirvana album any more than I do this one, listen to it!

Kurt, "Forever in debt to your priceless advice."

Arctic Monkeys - My Propeller (Single)

I wake up early in the morning (well, not too early, but early for a Sunday) and I can't move my body for some reason. I just couldn't get out of bed. So, I reach over to grab my iPod and play some music. I selected the album menu, closed my eyes and chose at random. My Propeller.

My Propeller is a single from Humbug, which I admit, didn't like their album the first time around but, the single made me change my mind about things. The single includes "My Propeller" and 3 other songs that are not on the record, I didn't care too much for "My Propeller", but the other 3... They're a real treat.

The album kicks off with "My Propeller", obvious choice for the first track, and it's great, less bass would be nice though. Then my favorite off the single, "Joining The Dots" plays and I was speechless. "The Afternoon's Hat" and "Don't Forget Whose Legs You're On" follow the same formula. I just didn't know what to say. It was positive though, I did like what I... no, Loved what I heard.

When I listened to Humbug I just thought "Why'd they change their sound? I'm sure they don't want to sound the same as their previous records, but that's what they're known for!" After listening to My Propeller I understood that I couldn't base a band after a record or two, I had to look at each album as a whole new entity. I now have a new respect for Humbug and the direction the Arctic Monkeys are headed.

Although I do prefer earlier Arctic Monkeys, the new Arctic Monkeys isn't too far behind for my liking. My Propeller really stands out as being the most mature release in their catalog.
--------------------------------------
What Do I Like About This Album? (Single)

My Propeller, I mean, there's so much to like about it. One, the flow that the Arctic Monkeys have, it's amazing and it's really indescribable. You have to listen to it for yourself. Another thing you have to love about it is the melodies themselves, you'll find yourself wanting to sing it all the time. It sounds like Alex Turner definitely is trying out a Jim Morrison kind of style and I like it a lot, that psychedelic vibe he gives off, oh man! It's just great. The 4 songs are just awesome, I even took the time to learn "Joining The Dots" on guitar and learn how to sing it as soon as I heard it, I think my band might have to cover it! I highly recommend this single to ANY music lover.

10 Things I Love/Hate About School

They say our summer vacation has come to an end
And that we simply have no more holiday to spend
They say "no more barefoot, no playing around in the pool"
They say "now it's time for us to go back to school" - The Hives

It's been a semester into the new school year and simply put, it's still the same as all the other years we spend here in this prison. The people are still the same, the teachers are still the same, nothing has changed. School is mostly a drag but there are some plus sides to coming back to it day by day.

I was thinking about what I like and dislike about school and I came up with this simple list.

Like:

1. Friends

School is horrible and to most it's a waste of time, but to me, having friends in your classroom and in the hallways makes school bearable. They talk to you to pass the time and if you're like me, they're there to have some laughs and get in trouble with.

2. Fun Teachers

Teachers aren't always mean and horrible. Some of them are pretty nice and can be your friends. I find it great that some teachers actually talk about something other than school related things like my health teacher talking about new shows he watches: Jersey Shore. You never expect that and it brings the teacher and the class together! They don't try to make the classroom dark like the music video to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall" (Wouldn't it be rad if we could trash a classroom like that?)

3. Football Games

Football games after school on Fridays were awesome! Although, I never actually watched the football games, they were fun to attend to for social conversations and to revisit friends who go to other schools. I did pay attention to the scores though and I cheered when we were scoring. One complaint I would have about attending football games are awkward conversations with people you don't really talk to and they keep following you around like a puppy >:/

4. Promoting Your Band Or An Event

Well, being in a band means nothing if you don't have fans to listen to your music. Your band can gain a little publicity by student body word of mouth. "Dude, they rocked last night!" The better your band, the more positive "reviews" about your band will be spread and more people will want to listen (now... if your band sucks... that can get spread around too and no one will want to hear you) School can definitely help you get the word out about your band or any event that you're trying to promote. In our case, there was a battle of the bands that we wanted people to know about and the principal kindly accepted to letting us post flyers around the school.

5. Good Environment

We like to think of school as a prison but it really isn't, at least ours isn't... It may look like a prison on the outside but it's actually kind of cool. Most of the people are nice, the facilities are clean, the hallways are clean, we have computers to use freely, the library is nice... I mean, the school is nice! I hate when people describe it as a "shit-hole" or a "dump"

Hate:

1. Drama

The thing I most hate about going to school is drama. It's so unnecessary. People don't grow up and resolve things maturely, it leads to more and more problems for everybody. Especially when it's for stupid reason... I snap when people are dramatic!

2. Busy Work

Sometimes, teachers don't have much planned out for the day and they give you busy work... work to keep you quiet and busy. Why? Everybody knows the material (because everyone scored an A on a quiz) and they still insist on giving us more work to "fully comprehend the subject." Teachers: Don't be lazy and teach us something new for a change (wow... never thought I'd be saying that)

3. Cliques

Cliques, the unavoidable. Cliques are really visible in our school, you can just point out anybody and tell where they belong. I'm not saying I don't belong in a clique because I do, I think I fall under the "rocker" and "class clown" categories. There are your typical cliques like jocks, plastics, burnouts, artsy, gangstas, nerds, and those popular people that are super fake.

4. Homework

This is an obvious "hate" because it's on everybody's list. I understand the importance of practicing material at home to comprehend a subject, but do we really need a lot of it every day? If everyone is getting a good grade, is there a reason to bring it down if someone forgets to do an assignment? I think not.

5. People That Won't Shut The F&%$ Up

There are those people that nobody likes and they try so hard to be cool and fit in somewhere by talking about things that didn't happen. This makes me sound like a huge asshole, but face it, it's true. More people would like them if the person would just be real and try not to be something different than what they are. Currently my group of friends are annoyed with an individual that is like this and nobody feels comfortable talking to him/her.

"Yeah, I won a surfing competition in California and I won $2,000. A girl came up to me and made out with me afterwards." Hahaha, yeah right!

So, what do you like or dislike about school?

The Datsuns - Outta Sight, Outta Mind

If I had a quarter for every time a band released a great rock and roll album in the last decade I would have... well, not too much. Just lunch money and a Snicker's bar worth. The Datsuns' Outta Sight, Outta Mind is one of those records... But no one "professionally" seems to think so...

Outta Sight, Outta Mind is The Datsuns' second album, and it was produced by John Paul Jones. Does that name sound familiar? The bassist of the legendary band, Led Zeppelin! These guys were thrown at people bearing the titles like "the future of rock and roll" and I'll be damned if that wasn't true. Well, at least it was at the time... their new album Headstunts is bad beyond belief.

The album is not something to listen to while you do your daily chores or take a shower. This is one of those "balls out rock and roll" albums that you blast when you're feeling dangerous and rebellious. To me, it's what a rock and roll band should sound like, and they sound like rock and roll. The album is very reminiscent of the 70's, I mean... it was produced by one of Led Zeppelin's band members, it should sound the way it does.

Now here's my beef with some of the reviews Outta Sight, Outta Mind got... What the fuck is wrong with it!? It's been given great accolades and it's been approved highly by rock and roll lovers (such as myself) but it's been given such low ratings by sites and magazines like Spin, Splendid, and The Guardian. These sites are claiming the record sounds too much like a "generic and forgettable rock band from the seventies." Come on people, they have a great sound and they achieve to give a rock and roller a sense of a high. So what if it sounds like a band from the seventies? Bands have similar sounds, it's common, if bands didn't sound like some other bands we wouldn't have "genres" and Pandora radio would not exist. At least they don't duplicate the sound, The Datsuns' make it their own sound and style, not like early Silverchair, and Bush trying to sound like Nirvana.

Outta Sight, Outta Mind... Great album, I recommend it to those who love rock and roll and are looking for something new to listen to.
--------------------------------------
What do I like about this album?

Well, I think I've basically said what I like about the album above, but I'll repeat myself. It's an awesome balls out rock and roll album. If it doesn't make you want to move or do something dangerous then you need to tune your ears because you're not hearing what everybody else is hearing. It is perfect rock music. Underrated by critics, loved by fans of good rock music. Outta Sight, Outta Mind should be on everyone's list of "music I need to listen to." I can't stress it enough... It's amazing.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

There's a reason why the Arctic Monkey's Favourite Worst Nightmare shot straight to number 1 in England's top 20 charts in it's first week of release. It's that damn good.

Favourite Worst Nightmare is loud, fast and eccentric with a touch of ambient solitude. It differs from their first album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (which holds a record for fastest selling debut record in the UK), by a few different things. The style of the Monkey's is still the same, not too different except maybe it sounds a little more polished. The previous record sounded very indie and "light" in a way and this one sounds very mainstream, very heavy.

The album is critically acclaimed (most giving an average of B+, A- ranges) and has gone platinum a couple times over.
------------------------------------
Why do I like this album?

I like this album because it flows so beautifully. It starts out fast and progressively gets more relaxing as you listen. Right from the start "Brianstorm" kicks in with blazing speed from Matt Helder's drumming and Alex Turner's guitar. It ends with a very ambient "505" and in my opinion is a nice way to end an album.
I also really love Alex Turner's flowing singing style in faster songs like "This House Is A Circus" and "D Is For Dangerous", very rap influenced and reminiscent of the first album's songs like "From The Ritz To The Rubble" and "Still Take You Home."
All in all, it's an amazing album that will have you wanting more and more every time you listen to it! Too bad they kind of fucked up that "wanting more" feeling with their next album, Humbug. Bah Humbug!

Nirvana - Nevermind

In 1991, grunge band Nirvana would release a record that would change the world. Fashion changed, television changed, radio changed. Everything changed.

Nevermind was Nirvana's second record and first record on a major label DGC (Geffen.) Kurt Cobain wanted to release a record that was different from the first one and different from the music of the Seattle grunge scene (bands like Mudhoney, Tad, early Soundgarden.) Nirvana and the record company expected low record sales but were surprised by the huge outcome of their release. It beat Michael Jackson's Dangerous for #1 on the billboard 200.

Nevermind has sold over 26 million copies worldwide and is responsible for bringing alternative rock to the mainstream. (Cobain later regrets this because people they hated (Jocks, macho rednecks, etc.) are now listening to the album and showing up at shows just for a "release.")
----------------------------
Why do I like this album?

What's not to like? It's an amazing album! Every single song is great, there are no "throw away songs" in this record. Fast angry songs like "Territorial Pissings" and "Stay Away" is what makes Nirvana great. It's their sound, the grungy yell that's familiar and recognizable. Nirvana also wrote slower ones like "Something In The Way" and proves that Nirvana isn't JUST a loud rock band and is influenced by good music like The Beatles. Overall, I think this is a perfect example of an album.

The Vines - Highly Evolved

The Vines. Christened by the media as one of "The" bands that brought back rock and roll to the mainstream. The Australian garage rock trio (later a quartet) released their first album Highly Evolved in 2002 (during this time the musical movement was "Garage Rock Revival.")

Highly Evolved was a success and spread like wildfire.
-------------------------------------------------------
Why do I like this album?

I like this album because it combines a lot of music that I like into one album. The Vines were influenced by Nirvana and The Beatles, two of my favorite bands. Songs like "Get Free" and "Highly Evolved" play the role of Nirvana, and songs like "Autumn Shade" and "1969" take a more psychedelic Beatles role.

The First of Many

Hey! My name is Virgilio (try saying that 5 times fast) and I'm a guy who loves rock music. I play guitar and sing in my band Blackout. This blog will be showing the world what I think is great music/videos/anything I find interesting. I hope you'll enjoy! :D
